Porsche is a brand that understands how a car should feel whether it is racing around a track or on the back roads in the country. Each car has a unique feel, and when you ask owners what made them purchase a Porsche, the common answer that I get is “there is something about the way the car feels and makes you feel when behind the wheel”. And to be honest I say exactly the same.

With many brands looking back at their past models and reviving them with a modern twist, Porsche has now done this to their iconic 356 “No.1” Roadster from 1948. This was strictly a two-seater 911 Speedster, the perfect car for driving along the French Riviera or through the Alps. It was and still is a real head turner and desirable for any car collector. This new 2019 911 Speedster follows the same path as the first by being; focused, driver-oriented and featuring all the motorsports technology, but retaining the ability to be usable every day.

To power this extremely good looking Speedster is a high revving 510PD four-litre naturally aspirated, flat-six ‘boxer’ engine which uses a six-speed GT manual transmission. In fact, like the original, this modern Speedster is only available with a manual gearbox, staying true to being a driver-focused car. Zero to 62mph takes 4 seconds and will reach 192mph. That is a rapid convertible.

What really makes this car stand out is the distinctive double-bubble streamlined headrest cowls, made entirely from a single piece of carbon-fibre with reinforced plastic, which for Porsche is their largest and most complex component used in a road going model to date. At this point, you may be wondering what type of roof the Speedster comes with, and it is fabric which helps keep the weight down and perfect for everyday use. Pair this up with the shortened window frames with their lowered cowl top panels and the smaller side windows, gives the car a super athletic look. This is a nod to the historic Porsche 356 Speedster from 1954. When it comes to operating the roof, like all convertibles, it is done with a push of a button, simple.

What about the interior, well this is like most modern Porsches, you have satellite navigation, air conditioning, and all the mod-cons you need. What is special are the little unique touches of the Speedster brand like the “Speedster” logo in the headrests and the badge on the cross structure behind the seats, which shows the serial number and the unit number which is limited to 1,948.

For those of you who don’t have a Porsche in your collection and you have been waiting for a reason to buy one, then look no further. This 911 Speedster is a real head-turner and although a little early to say, but could be a good long term investment.

There is one package I would recommend getting when ordering you Speedster, and that is the Heritage Design Package. Created by Style Porsche and implemented by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, this equipment reinterprets classic elements from the 1950s and ‘60s. This includes a Black and Cognac interior colour scheme with golden details. Special “spears” paintwork in White for the front fascia and front wings is applied to the basic vehicle paintwork, which is GT Silver Metallic. Historic-inspired motorsports decals for the doors and front lid complete the picture. You can, in turn, select their own maximum two-digit start numbers. The Porsche crests and the gold-coloured logos correspond to the designs used in the 1950s and ‘60s. The Heritage Design package costs £15,302 inc VAT.

Porsche Design Timepieces has also produced a special chronograph for the new 911 Speedster, of which only 1,948 examples will be available: the Porsche Design “911 Speedster chronograph” and the “911 Speedster Heritage Design chronograph” can be ordered exclusively by future owners of a new Speedster at Porsche Centres from May 2019. Priced at £9,900.00 inc VAT.

The new 911 Speedster is available to order from Porsche Centres in the UK from today, priced from £211,599 including VAT.
